Bush's proficiency again stunned CQ. Did no one else notice the stretches for which the president spoke in the flawless rhythmic cadences of a country preacher, with an iambic pentameter that could set clocks? Far more juicy than a metronome and swinging (forgive us) like Count Basie, Bush didn't confuse any of his listeners. No one who saw the debate was required to think teribly much about what he said. His single point: Kerry voted Yes on the $87B. Sure though, we too noticed some cut up moments. On the other hand it does seem a little early for a Democratic victory bash. Notice that for the Gallup ABC polled five hundred people, CBS two.
CQ has deducted points from Kerry on three counts: ever-more voiciferous interest in God, Bushspeak appropriation (Homeland Security) and the gung-ho KILL KILL KILL bits. Kill, indeed: we'd rather Godzilla win.
